What Is Air Sealing?

Conditioned air that leaks from homes and business is the single biggest cause of wasted energy in the U.S. If you pinpoint each and every tiny gap where air escapes, it would add up to leaving a window wide open all year round while running your AC or furnace.

To keep conditioned air where it belongs—circulating inside your home—air sealing is the smart choice. With air sealing, trained technicians locate the source of air leaks, most of which are in crawlspaces and attics, and seal them with various compounds. Foam and caulk are typically the most used compounds to seal leaks.

Where Air Sealing Is Needed Most

The following list represents the biggest problem areas for air leakage. Filling the gaps in these spaces will equal big energy savings for you and keep your home more comfortable.

Attics: Holes in the ceiling lead to air leaks, called a thermal bypass. We’ll identify the gaps and seal them with foam. Gaps are likely around light fixtures, bathroom fans, plumbing stacks, wall cavities, and more.

Walls: We’ll seal electrical outlets with foam backers to keep air from seeping through. Homes built before 1965 typically have no wall insulation, which translates into 20-40 percent of air leakage in your home. We can add insulation to empty walls to drastically reduce your energy costs.

Floors: When electrical, plumbing, chimneys, or ductwork lines cut through the floor into your basement, you’re bound to have air leakage. We’ll identify and seal these gaps to keep your conditioned air in your home.

Ductwork: Ductwork is vital to circulating conditioned air through your home, but the gaps around it account for 10-30 percent of air leakage. We’ll cover gaps in ductwork with foil or mastic tape, which lasts much longer than typical duct tape.

Other problem areas: We’ll use caulking or foam to seal gaps around electrical service, dryer vents, hose spigots, air conditioner lines, and more.

Call Classic Aire Care for Air Sealing in St. Louis

To maximize the positive effects of air sealing, we recommend upgrading your insulation. Old insulation lets air escape around it, reducing its thermal resistance value. We’ll determine how well your insulation is performing and suggest areas where an upgrade would help the most.
