How To Determine If Duct Cleaner Did Thorough Job

If you have someone clean your ducts, you may not know where to start and how to determine what type of job they did. The EPA gives a post cleaning consumer checklist of items to inspect to make sure the duct cleaner did a good job.

First of all, you shouldn’t be able to see any visible dust or other debris with the naked eye. It is important to check if the contractor obtained access to and cleaned the entire heating and cooling system, including ductwork, drain pans, humidifiers, coils and fans.

It is also important to check that the contractor can show the duct work and plenums are clean.

You will want to inspect and make sure that the heat exchanger surface and both sides of the cooling coil are clean. You should be able to point a flashlight into the cooling coil and light should shine through to the other side. All coil fins should be evenly spaced, not bent over or smashed together. Check to make sure the coil drain pan is completely clean and draining properly.

When you look at the blower, it should be clean and free of oil and debris as well. In the plenums, it should be free of visible dust or debris. Filters should fit properly and be at the efficiency recommended by the HVAC manufacturer. The supply air plenum should be free of moisture stains and contaminants.

All interior ductwork surfaces should be checked they are free from visible debris. Fiberglass materials should be not torn and should be adhered where it is installed. Any new access doors in sheet metal should not just be held together with duct tape, but should have screws or rivets adhering it to the ductwork.

You will want to check the air vents are all reattached where they were and all registers and grills should be visibly clean. Finally, your heating and cooling system should run in the proper modes after the cleaning is complete.

Top notch install quality. While my ac wasn’t that old, I opted for a higher efficiency heat pump system and replace my worn-out older furnace! The difference in my home is night and day difference, can’t wait to see what the bills do.
